A Monte Carlo program has been used to simulate the energy dissipation of medium-energy electrons (10-30 keV) backscattered by various thick targets and thin films (both supported and unsupported). The behaviour of the backscattered energy as a function of the film thickness is then used to determine the mean depth of penetration of the backscattered electrons.

Abstract
