In this article we first describe the linguistic complexity underlying narrative. We then propose a model of narrative and an architecture for narrative generation, Author, derived from work in narratology. Finally, we describe and end-to-end implemetation of the Author model in the StoryBook narrative prose generation system and present a formal evaluation of the narratives it produces
