This paper reconstructs the figure of Luigi Messedaglia as a paradigmatic example of the physician-intellectual in Italy between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on biographical, medical, political, and literary sources, the article examines the plurality of Messedaglia’s activities and situates them within the broader cultural and institutional transformations of post-unification Italy.
