Abstract

How far are the stars that we see every night? How do they move? Gaia is a spacecraft dedicated to astronomical observations that was launched in 2013 to provide accurate answers to these questions and measure astrometric data of at least one billion stars in the Milky Way, the galaxy hosting our Solar System. In this paper we summarize some of the most interesting discoveries, and some unexpected consequences, of the accurate Gaia measurements.
