In this dialogue, a philosopher and a paleontologist share and discuss their views about the relationship between nature and change. Going into detail, in the first part they show how our picture of nature affects the way we understand, either deterministically or non-deterministically, human plasticity. In the second part, the distinction between process and event is investigated in order to see how continuity and discontinuity coexist in nature’s metamorphoses. In the third part, finally, Costa and Bernardi discuss how being aware of such intricacy may help us deal with climate change and, more generally, with the tough challenges that the Anthropocene has in store for the human race.

Abstract

In this dialogue, a philosopher and a paleontologist share and discuss their views about the relationship between nature and change. Going into detail, in the first part they show how our picture of nature affects the way we understand, either deterministically or non-deterministically, human plasticity. In the second part, the distinction between process and event is investigated in order to see how continuity and discontinuity coexist in nature’s metamorphoses. In the third part, finally, Costa and Bernardi discuss how being aware of such intricacy may help us deal with climate change and, more generally, with the tough challenges that the Anthropocene has in store for the human race.
