The Invention of News? Information and Communication in Early Modern Europe The notion that we live in an 'information age' and the awareness that we are experiencing a revolution in information and communication have motivated historians to reflect on parallels with the past. As a consequence, in the last two decades an impressive number of articles, monographs, edited collections, and international research projects have been dedicated to the history of news in early modern Europe. Within this historiographical trend Andrew Pettegree’s The Invention of News (2014) stands out as a major contribution to this topic, aiming to reconstruct not just the rise of the newspaper but the complex communication environment of the early modern period. Surveying the most recent studies, this review essay analyzes current trends in the history of communication and information, suggesting some possible future developments in the field.
