The 1960s were a decade of political experiments and social change in Western Europe. Against this background, the essay suggests the existence of a common ground that allows a comparison among three experiences of government: the first center-left coalition in Italy, the West German «Grand Coalition» and the British Labour government led by Harold Wilson. Despite apparent differences, the essay highlights the similarities stemming from common references to the theory and practice of «modernization», and to the planning and rationalization of several aspects of the political, economic and social life, considered as the best solution to the problems raised by the impressive but tumultuous post-war recovery.

Abstract
The 1960s were a decade of political experiments and social change in Western Europe. Against this background, the essay suggests the existence of a common ground that allows a comparison among three experiences of government: the first center-left coalition in Italy, the West German «Grand Coalition» and the British Labour government led by Harold Wilson. Despite apparent differences, the essay highlights the similarities stemming from common references to the theory and practice of «modernization», and to the planning and rationalization of several aspects of the political, economic and social life, considered as the best solution to the problems raised by the impressive but tumultuous post-war recovery.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
