This contribution provides an overview of the activities being conducted at ITC-irst with the objective of developing an advanced dialogue system based on in-car hands-free voice interaction. The system is conceived for obtaining driving assistance and for accessing tourist information while driving. The architecture of the dialogue system is here presented, with a description of its main modules: Front-end Speech Processing, Recognition Engine, Natural Language Understanding, Dialogue Manager and Car Wide Web. Some results are also given, based on the use of real databases that were recorded in the car environment either following a WOZ approach or asking some subjects to use a preliminary version of the prototype
