A dual-band patch antenna that employs Minkowski’s reconfigurable fractal geometry is proposed in this work. The Minkowski fractal iterations are activated by electronic switches (RF-MEMS) to change the operative frequency. Thanks to the considered fractal geometry, it is possible to obtain a compact structure, especially at lower frequencies. In particular, the operative frequency decreases at each fractal iteration while keeping the same antenna dimensions. An antenna model has been designed and optimized for the GSM frequency band and numerically assessed with a commercial electromagnetic simulator. The antenna structure is compact, simple, inexpensive, and particularly suitable for small satellite applications.
