Gamification, the application of game design elements in non-game contexts, has garnered significant attention for its potential to motivate and engage users across diverse fields. Over the past decade, this concept has evolved from a theoretical framework to a practical tool for enhancing training, education, and behavior change. This chapter explores the intersection of gamification and the Metaverse—a collective virtual space that merges physical and digital realities. We examine how gamification principles can be integrated into the Metaverse to foster immersive and engaging experiences, enhancing educational outcomes, citizen participation, and job training. The Metaverse, supported by digital twin technology, offers innovative platforms for interactive learning, virtual town halls, and cost-effective industrial training. However, the integration of gamification within this virtual realm remains underexplored, particularly in terms of its application to sustainable development. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of gamification concepts, the Metaverse’s modalities, and existing applications, addressing how immersive gamification can be leveraged to tackle sustainability challenges. We propose guidelines for implementing gameful systems within the Metaverse and outline a research agenda to advance the field. By highlighting the potential of gamification to contribute to sustainable urban development and community engagement, this paper aims to lay the groundwork for future research and practical applications in creating sustainable virtual worlds.
