This document is a description of the current state of the Italian version of the SURGE v5.3 grammar for English, written by Michael Elhadad and Jaques Robin at Columbia University. Both grammars utilize the FUF system to generate natural language text in a process where a semantic/syntactic input representation is converted int a fully specified syntactit realization. A linearization/morphology module then converts this syntactict realization into normal text. The Italian grammar described herein is directly modified from an enhanced version of SURGE, containing additional suport for quoted sentences and HTML/XML formatting, along with a significant number of small improvements. The morphology component in particular contains substantial changes, owing to the differences in morphology between the language
