Finding a way for increasing the ability to move autonomously is the ultimate prospect for blind and partially sighted people. It is at the same time a challenge for the research community called to adequately answer to such an aspiration. In this paper, we propose a passive system for helping blind persons to navigate in indoor environments. It includes stereoscopic video eyewear and a processing unit, in which are implemented processing modules for position estimation, people detection, safe path estimation as well as obstacle avoidance. Output instructions are provided to the user by means of a speech synthesizer. The system was tested in a university building and has shown encouraging results.

Abstract
Finding a way for increasing the ability to move autonomously is the ultimate prospect for blind and partially sighted people. It is at the same time a challenge for the research community called to adequately answer to such an aspiration. In this paper, we propose a passive system for helping blind persons to navigate in indoor environments. It includes stereoscopic video eyewear and a processing unit, in which are implemented processing modules for position estimation, people detection, safe path estimation as well as obstacle avoidance. Output instructions are provided to the user by means of a speech synthesizer. The system was tested in a university building and has shown encouraging results.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
