MEMORI (MEMory based Object Recognition indigital Images)1 is a system for the detection andrecognition of objects in digital color images. Theobjects are stored in a database that represents thememory of the system. Each object is describedby several shots taken from different points of view.Object detection is achieved by segmenting the inputimage using color and textural information, andgrouping the obtained regions by analyzing their adjacencyrelationships and their visual similarity tothe database objects. Database objects and regiongroups are described by vectors of low-level features, like color, texture and shape. Visual similarityis defined as the L1-distance among such vectors. The region grouping strategy is guided by heuristicrules mainly related to the distance of the groupsto the database objects. The final result is a setof image portions each associated to one or moredatabase objects along with a confidence score.
