This paper describes the objectives and the general architecture of an intelligent recommendation system aimed at supporting a leisure traveler in the task of selecting a tourist destination. The system enables the user to identify his own personalized destination by aggregating elementary items (locations, services and activities). Case-Based Reasoning techniques enable the user to browse a repository of past travels and make possible the relative ranking of the elementary items included in a recommendation. The system integrates data and information originating from external, already existent, tourist portals exploiting an XML-based information server and data mapping techniques. Moreover, user information needs are supported by a XML-query component that combines OLAP techniques and similarity-based retrieval

Abstract
This paper describes the objectives and the general architecture of an intelligent recommendation system aimed at supporting a leisure traveler in the task of selecting a tourist destination. The system enables the user to identify his own personalized destination by aggregating elementary items (locations, services and activities). Case-Based Reasoning techniques enable the user to browse a repository of past travels and make possible the relative ranking of the elementary items included in a recommendation. The system integrates data and information originating from external, already existent, tourist portals exploiting an XML-based information server and data mapping techniques. Moreover, user information needs are supported by a XML-query component that combines OLAP techniques and similarity-based retrievalI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
