Criteria used in the definition of environmental impact indicators are presented, with regard to both high voltage (HV) overhead power lines (OPLs) and transformers located in an urban area, which is the district of Trento, in northern Italy. The definition of a set of impact indicators is useful to relate information of different typologies, such as exposure and population density distribution, and to furnish the administrator with a quantitative tool based on environmental impact parameters. Regarding the OPLs, an exposure map over the whole area of the district was firstly determined, and afterwards the attention was focused on eleven selected sites, where the population density and magnetic flux density indexes exceeded given thresholds. Only for these sites both refined magnetic flux density simulations and measurements were carried out. A similar methodology is proposed also for the analysis of the exposure generated by transformers, even though this particular work is still in the beginning. The principal step is, also in this case, the selection of those sources particularly close to the population, while the main difference is the simulation algorithm to be used. All data concerning power lines and transformers technical specifications, social/demographic information and distribution map are related to geographical information and managed inside geographical information system (GIS) software
