This paper presents a summary of the activities of ITC-Irst inthe field of smart VLSI opto-sensors. A description of the integrated devices developed at ITC-Irst in past and present projects as applied to the industrial and scientific fields will be given. These includes examples of smart opto-sensors as digital camera for security and process control and motion detection, linear sensors for spectro-photometry, point sensors for position detection and control, and finally sensors for 3D vision. All the sensors presented have been fabricated using standard CMOS technology that allows the monolithic integration of photo-sensors, together with readout circuits, A/D converters and digital signal processors
