In this paper we describe the use of cinematic techniques in building mobile multimedia museum guides. Our hypothesis is that a user interface that employs cinematic techniques reduces the inherent invasiveness that a PDA brings to the museum experience. We describe a guide called CineMo that provides information to visitors in an Italian castle. The multimedia presentations consist of an audio commentary accompanied by an animated sequence of images. These are synchronized with the audio by employing concepts from the language of cinematography. Finally, we present the results of an initial evaluation that was conducted with 46 visitors. The evaluation supports the claim that cinematic techniques help influence the attentional behavior of the visitor by reducing the number of eye-shifts between the guide and the environment
