The text analyses the strategies employed by some of the more important trading families in the timber trade along the water system of the River Brenta. These companies, which were consolidated by means of cross-border marriages, managed the cutting, processing and sale of the forestry resources of both the areas where they resided and of other strategic areas along the borders of the Venetian empire. The research, which is predominantly based on sources from Venetian notaries and legal documents emanating from the Privy Council in Innsbruck, testifies to the offshoots from and interconnections between such trading families which were operating on the end markets of Padova and Venice between the 16th and 17th centuries. The period studied reveals a dynamism in these Alpine economies, characterised by the substitution of some of the feudal families from the border regions through trading families from the Republic of Venice, and by a certain penetrability of the Trentino-Tyrolean nobility.
