The role of Irst in the BRAIN Project has consisted in the development of a dedicated technology for the fabrication of multielectrode arrays. The purpose of the devices is to monitor the extracellular electrical activity of cultured neurons in order to better understand the parallel processing of information in the brain. To this purpose, we have designed and fabricated 4 inch dishes by using different materials. In particular different combinations for the conducting and insulating layers have been implemented and tested. Both silicon and quartz have been used as substrates. The devices have been fully tested and the results will be presented. The results of the electrical testing has shown that the devices perform according to the specification with particular regard to the impedance in the desired frequency range. Coultured neurons have grown satisfactorily on the devices and their electrical activity has been measured.
